CBD: The Non-Psychoactive Cannabinoid

As of now, it is understood that there are well over a hundred different compounds in the marijuana plant, and that CBD is the non-psychoactive relative of THC — and one of the most useful cannabinoids in terms of pain relief and other forms of medicinal therapy.

Unlike other studied cannabinoids, CBD will not produce a “high” in the user, which makes it incredibly appealing to most patients. It is also for this reason that CBD has become so sought after as a therapeutic treatment for so many enervating conditions.

CBD has been proven to contribute many different benefits to the human body, such as:

·     Antibacterial

·     Neuro-protectant

·     Anti-inflammatory

·     Muscle relaxant

·     Relieves anxiety

·     Relieves pain

And these are just a few of the well-known properties of CBD that have been documented in research publications. Thanks to CBD, hundreds of thousands of patients have been taking control of their conditions in a natural, virtually side-effect free manner.

Moreover, there has been a great deal of money put into the scientific research of CBD over the last couple of years. With such a huge stigma still surrounding the marijuana plant, though, it is paramount to have sound evidence that not all compounds produced by the plant cause the same results — especially as most people associate the cannabis plant with the well-known THC high.

As a result of this research, there have been groundbreaking findings and progression made over recent years in terms of the potential therapeutic effects of CBD. Some of these publications have documented positive results on the symptoms of:

·     Cancer

·     Anxiety

·     Depression

·     AIDS/HIV

·     Epilepsy

·     Chronic Pain

·     Irritable Bowel Diseases (IBD/IBS/Crohn’s Disease)

·     Glaucoma

And this is just a sample of conditions – there are many more documented conditions and clinical studies where CBD has been used as a viable treatment option. The scale and variety of diseases just goes to highlight how versatile of a treatment CBD is – all while being 100% natural and with virtually no side effects!

Created by the International Olympic Committee, WADA unifies global anti-doping policies. Organizations that use the WADA policy include the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee, all International Federations, and over 200 National Anti-Doping Organizations, including USADA. USADA has advocated for the adoption of WADA policy by collegiate and professional sports leagues, although this change has yet to be embraced.

The modified WADA document does caution athletes to be aware of the THC levels in the CBD products they are using. The document states, “Synthetic cannabidiol is not a cannabimimetic; however, cannabidiol extracted from cannabis plants may also contain varying concentrations of THC, which remains a prohibited substance” (source).

WADA’s threshold for THC is 150 nanograms (ng) per milliliter (ml), which was raised from 15ng/ml in 2013. This is the highest THC threshold compared to the collegiate and professional sports leagues discussed here. In terms of recreational substances, WADA has been progressive. Dr. Alan Vernec, the agency’s medical director, told the LA Times, “It’s a very active process that … is always open to debate and is discussed regularly.”

With its significant impact on the global sports community, it is our hope that WADA’s decision will prompt other sports organizations to follow its lead on CBD regulations.

Energy Supplements

1. Ashwagandha- This herb has been used for centuries in Ayurveda, an Indian medicine based on natural healing. It can go by the name of Indian ginseng and winter cherry and it comes from the root of a small flowering shrub in India.

This energizing herb has many more health benefits. It is known to be great for brain health. It improves memory, cognitive function, and can even reduce symptoms of depression. It relieves stress and anxiety, reducing the stress hormone, cortisol which is a nasty little hormone known to cause fat to be stored in the belly.

Ashwagandha has been proven to fight the growth of cancer cells and even help kill cancer cells that already exist. It has been proven to cut down on the causes of inflammation and reduce insomnia. You’ll definitely have more energy if you get a better night’s sleep.

2. Rhodiola Rosea- This is a root from an herb that grows in Scandinavian countries, high up in the mountains. It is also called arctic root or golden root. Rhodiola helps to relieve fatigue and anxiety after just three days of use. It has also been proven to help improve your ability to stay focused and relieve mental fog.

This herb is also known to be good for depression because it balances out any unbalanced neurotransmitters, one of the leading causes of depression. It is well tolerated and has very few side effects as opposed to other prescription drugs for depression.

As a bonus, rhodiola rosea has been known to be helpful in controlling blood sugar and help those who suffer from diabetes. It also contains some cancer fighting components. This is a great herb to add to your daily supplements if you suffer from mental exhaustion regularly.

3. Maca- This is another root that is ground up and taken in either powder form or encapsulated for easy swallowing. This root is found in Peru and has been used by the natives to enhance fertility and sexual prowess. Although that’s always good, we like it because it increases your energy.

Another name for the Maca root is Peruvian ginseng. It is a highly nutritious plant with plenty of vitamin C, copper, iron, and small amounts of potassium, vitamin B6, and manganese. It also has protein and fiber as well.

Maca contains flavonoids that can help to improve your mood and increase energy even to the extent that it can help athletes with endurance sports.

4. Asian Ginseng- This herb contains polysaccharides and oligopeptides that have been proven to fight oxidative stress and improve energy production. It helps to decrease physical and mental fatigue.

Studies have shown that people who are sleep deprived even get less protection from flu vaccines. Getting at least 7, ideally 8 hours sleep every night helps to support immune function. How much sleep do you get?

Studies show that people who exercise moderately five days a week are less likely to get colds or flus. However, intense bouts of exercise, can temporarily suppress immune cells. If you do lots of exercise think about increasing your intake of immune boosting foods and nutrients
